Bethany. Without doubt, one of the most needed places of safety in Johannesburg, Bethany (very well run and managed by Brigit Edwards) is a home for displaced women and children. Young unwed mothers-to-be, having found out they are pregnant, are often driven away for their homes, familial and social infrastructure. Bethany takes these ladies and gives them the opportunity to upskill themselves, while at the same time providing an opportunity of education for their young children. Little Saints is a wonderful school with very strong ties to Bethany. St Columba’s gives financial, moral and material help whenever needed.
COME AND SEE THIS PLACE, WHERE EVERY WOMAN AND CHILD IS SPECIAL
The woman often arrive at Bethany with nothing but the clothes on their back, feeling completely hopeless and helpless. Bridget takes them in, and with intensive counselling builds up their self esteem and confidence. Once they are emotionally and physically stable they are then trained according to their ability and level of education. Apart from this Bethany helps them to register for or find their documents (usually the partners confiscate their ID’s, birth certificates, etc to degrade them even more).
Once the women have been trained Bethany assists them in finding employment, preferably aligned wit the skill they have been taught. After they have earned three months’ salaries, Bethany finds them and their children accommodation and sets them up with the basics …. crockery, cutlery, curtains and bedding.
